Air regulations impose restrictions on emissions of criteria and hazardous air pollutants, and typically require permits prior to construction of an emission source. Recordkeeping and reporting are key elements of the air regulations. Air pollutants are classified as criteria air pollutants and hazardous air pollutants. State and federal regulations are not identical, for example the hazardous air pollutants regulated and the requirements to demonstrate compliance can be significantly different between federal and state regulations.
